Mass-Scale Development of Astana

The Astana – A New City Special Economic Zone has been working on the left bank of Astana since 2002, with a total area of 1,052.6 hectares . A decree on expansion of the SEZ area by 3,276 hectares has been drafted and now is being concurred by the Government. After the expansion, the total area of the Astana – A New City SEZ will make 4,842.3 hectares .

A total of 186 facilities have been registered at the SEZ since establishing. To date, 97 facilities been commissioned, and 89 are being built: 25 engineering and transport facilities, 29 apartment houses, 27 social buildings, and 8 administrative buildings. The term of the SEZ has been extended until 2010.

As of 1 May 2007 , more than $5.1 billion has been invested in construction in the SEZ, and $2.9 billion of the amount has been used to date. In 2006, a total of $1.13 billion was used – 1.9 times more ($597 million) than in 2005. The investment amount in 2007 is expected to reach $1.23 billion.

During 2006- 2010, a total of 20 transport infrastructure facilities will be built, including 4 bridges, 8 traffic interchanges, 8 pedestrian subways, 2 overpasses, and about 42 km of new roads.

Investment Environment

The booming construction in Astana attract the international interest from the CIS and abroad. Within the last nine years, Astana has significantly strengthened its international reputation as a new political and administrative centre.

The investment amount in the fixed assets in January-May 2007 was 115,590.7 million tenge ($948,000), or 18.1% more than in January-May 2006. As of 1 June 2007 , Astana has 22,977 economic entities (legal entities), and 15,121 of them are operating.

Under the Regional Programme for Industrial Innovative Development of Astana for 2006-2008, six big investment projects have been completed in Astana totalling $77 million. The biggest of them include:

* a lime and sand brick production plant, based on the German technology Dorstener;
* a face brick production plant, based on the Italian technology Bedesski;
* a silica brick production plant using ash containing waste; and
* a concrete production plant.

In 2007, the following investment projects will be commissioned under the above mentioned Programme:

* a concrete production plant (capacity: 120 m3/hour); and
* a concrete, reinforced concrete items and structures production plant.

Kazakhstan – Construction Industry News

With a current economic boom, the construction industry is developing at a fast rate and is of special importance for Kazakhstan .

As of January-May 2007, 5,441 construction companies work in Kazakhstan . During this period, 162.4 billion tenge ($1.3 billion) has been invested in housing construction, or 162% to the respective period in 2006. A total of 3 million sq. m of housing has been commissioned, or 1.56 times more than in the same period in the last year. The largest share of commissioned residential houses nationwide is held by Astana (19.2%) and Almaty (16.9%).

According to the draft state programme, residential commissioning will be as follows: in 2008 – 8.3 million sq. m, in 2009 – 8.9 million sq. m, in 2010 – 9.7 million sq. m of total area.

Kazakhstan 's foreign trade turnover in January-May 2007 was $29,338.1 million, or 36.8% growth against January-May 2006, including export – $17,503.8 million (a 28.3% growth), and import – $11,834.3 million (a 51.7% growth). The investment amount in the fixed assets in January-June 2007 was 1,230.2 billion tenge ($10 million), or 11.2% more than in January-June 2006.

AstanaBuild is the biggest construction project in Northern and Central Kazakhstan . In 2008, the exhibition will celebrate its 10th anniversary.

In 2005, Astana Build was approved by UFI, a major exhibition association, and in 2007 successfully underwent an international exhibition audit.

For a number of years, AstanaBuild has been a show of advanced technologies concentrating the latest achievements in the national and foreign construction industry, building and finishing materials.

About 70% of foreign exhibitors of AstanaBuild have already occupied their niches in the market of Kazakhstan , and are successfully implementing their projects.
