The Karakalpak-Australian archaeological studies held in Khorezm discovered the ancient city of Kazakly-yatkan (Akshahan-kala), - reports newspaper Pravda Vostoka with reference to M. Karlybaev, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Director, Research Institute for Human Sciences, Karakalpakstan Branch of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
The ancient settlement was found during the archaeological and topographical study of the Tashkyrman oasis, dated back to the V century BC and existed until the VI-VII centuries. Its topography indicates its great importance in the development of civilization in Ancient Khorezm, in fact, the city of Akshahan Kala is supposed to be its capital.
The excavation of the palace and the temple part of Akshahan Kala has found the so-called “Portrait Gallery” - colored wall paintings, perhaps the oldest ones in Central Asia. The painting samples were sent to Oxford (UK), Sydney (Australia) and New Zealand for radiocarbon analysis to determine their exact age.
