he upcoming Osaka Kansai Expo 2025 is breaking new ground by offering a virtual reality experience that allows global audiences to explore its wonders without setting foot in Japan. According to a recent report by The Asahi Shimbun, the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition is set to release the "Virtual Expo - Yumeshima Islands in the Sky" app in early April, ahead of the expo's official opening.
This innovative app, compatible with smartphones, tablets, personal computers, and certain VR goggles, enables users to select avatars and navigate a metaverse comprising 12 floating islands. These islands feature gates, pavilions, the expo’s iconic roof ring, and other highlights. Each virtual pavilion has been meticulously designed by participating countries, regions, and private companies, offering unique presentations that transcend the physical exhibits.
Inside the virtual pavilions, users can engage with displays that extend beyond real-world limitations, incorporating alternative options and exclusive event videos. The platform also fosters social interaction, allowing avatars to communicate through text messages, stamps, and gestures, enhancing the communal feel of the virtual expo.
This marks the first time in world expo history that such an extensive virtual experience is being offered. The initiative aims to include individuals who may face challenges visiting the physical venue, such as residents in nursing facilities. The association plans to provide devices to these groups, ensuring a more inclusive experience. The app is also accessible internationally, with a target of achieving 200 million accesses to the virtual space.
Despite the comprehensive virtual offering, organizers emphasize that the app serves as a digital catalog to promote in-person visits. They highlight that activities and culinary experiences unique to the physical expo cannot be replicated digitally. Advance ticket sales have reached only half of the 14 million target, underscoring the need to boost physical attendance.
Developed by an NTT group company, the app is provided to the association free of charge, reflecting a collaborative effort to blend technology with cultural exhibition.
The Osaka Kansai Expo 2025 opens on April 13, promising a fusion of physical and virtual experiences that cater to a global audience.
