Satani Kamurj (Devil's Bridge) near Tatev Village
Not far from the Tatev Monastery, you can see an ingenious bridge, called Satani Kamurj or Satanayi Kamurj. The name translates from Armenian as the Devil's Bridge. It lies over the Vorotan Gorge and the turbulent Vorotan River.
The river hit the walls of the rock that connected the edges of the gorge for many millennia and eventually punched a huge hole in it, resembling an arch. The bridge was formed from calcareous tufa (travertine) under the influence of hot mineral waters that flow into the Vorotan River. Thus, a unique natural phenomenon appeared, which has fascinated visitors for many centuries.
A highway leading from Goris to Tatev was laid across the Devil's Bridge. The bridge offers a panorama of the river and the entire Vorotan gorge. It is about 30 meters long and 60 meters wide.
Vorotan River
The Vorotan River starts at the top of Mount Davagez. Gathering water from springs and melted snow, it runs along steep gorges, villages, medieval fortresses, and ancient monasteries. It is popular among mountain rafting enthusiasts in summer.
