Independence Day in Azerbaijan, also known as State Sovereignty Day, is celebrated annually on October 18. On this day in 1991, the government adopted the Declaration of Independence of Azerbaijan as the bedrock of the newly established nation.

Independence Day in Azerbaijan was a public holiday until 2006, when it was declared a working holiday. Although no longer an official day off, Azerbaijanis still celebrate the occasion, particularly in capital city Baku. Azerbaijan’s president and governmental leaders officially congratulate the people and organize competitions, concerts and special exhibitions in downtown Baku. Festivities always end with a magnificent fireworks show.
