Kochkor town (named after Stolypin until 1917, 60 kilometers from Issyk-Kul Lake) is located along the route from Balykchi to Naryn (south of the Issyk Kul Lake westcoast, past Orto-Tokoy Reservoir). From the earliest times, Kochkor has been an easy staging point along the route to Kashgar (the Silk Road oasis) through Torugart. Tourists are welcomed to visit local businesses manufacturing the traditional nomadic crafts, where they can buy colorful and exotic souvenirs at the manufacturer’s price. Son-Kul Lake and healthcare facility on the basis of salt mines (providing asthma and allergy treatment) are next to Kochkor.
