Varangians

The name Varangians was used for Scandinavian tribes to which Slavic cities governors had to pay their tribute. It is worth mentioning that the Russian history until the ninth century, i.e. emergence of Kievan Russia, is rather conditional since it is based on ancient chronicles, namely the Russian Primary Chronicle. In accordance to it in 862 the citizens of Novgorod, who suffered from internecine wars, address for help the brothers from Varangian tribes - Rurik, Sineus and Truvor - and invited them to Novgorod as rulers.

This legend is very much argued among scientists but is accepted that the first ruling dynasty originated from Ryurik, the prince warrior.
