Kremlin Cathedrals, Moscow Kremlin
The Cathedral Square is the main square of the Kremlin. In ancient times, all the main city’s streets led there from the Kremlin gate. There all solemn events of the capital, the services on the occasion of great religious holidays, processions dedicated to the coronations and weddings of Russian tsars, the receptions of foreign ambassadors were held.
The unique beautiful architectural complex of the Cathedral Square, picturesque and harmonious, was created by the efforts and talents of Russian masters and Italian architects. Cathedral Square's modern appearance was mainly formed in the second half of the fifteenth century.
Built over 500 years ago, this superb ensemble is still exciting. The square received its name after the outstanding architectural monuments, the famous cathedrals of the Kremlin: Assumption, Annunciation and Archangel as well as the Twelve Apostles Cathedral, the Church of the Deposition of the Robe, the bell tower of Ivan the Great and others. At present, all the ancient churches of the Kremlin, situated on the Cathedral Square, in addition to their religious functions also serve as museums displaying the masterpieces of ancient art.
