Tajik National park is enrolled to the UNESCO world heritage list

Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan Tajik National Park “Pamir Mountains” became one of the natural sites recently included into the UNESCO World Heritage List, - reports UN News Center. The decision was adopted on 21 June 2013 in Cambodia, where a World Heritage Committee session, is being currently held.

The National Park “Pamir Mountains” is located in the eastern part of Tajikistan. The park having a territory over 2.5 million hectares, is located in the heart of the Pamir mountain unit, with the highest mountain ranges of Eurasia divaricated from it. It is home to Tajikistan’ rare species of birds and mammals, including the Marco Polo argali, snow leopard, Siberian ibex and so on. Because of frequent earthquakes, the national park territory is sparsely populated, and practically is not affected by impact of human activities detrimental to nature. Tajik National Park is the largest protected natural area of the country.

The UNESCO World Heritage List, with about 1,000 objects, was set up in accordance with the provisions of the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of 1972. Alongside with National Park “Pamir Mountains” the list includes the natural objects such as Mount Etna in Italy, biosphere reserves and El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar in Mexico, and Xinjiang - the Tien Shan in China and the Namib Desert in Namibia.
