Best Time to Visit the Aral Sea
Aral Sea at the end of September
Currently, the Aral Sea is just 10% of its former size, with the remaining 90% now the Aralkum Desert. The former lakebed is laden with salt and pesticides, which get blown hundreds of kilometers during windy seasons. So, when is the ideal time to visit the Aral Sea to ensure a comfortable trip?
Spring is a great time to visit. March is still quite chilly and damp, but temperatures rise above 15 degrees Celsius in April and May, reaching up to 30 degrees by late May. Nights, however, can still be quite cold. This season also sees the most rainfall, typically about once a month.
Aral Sea in May
Summer turns the region into a blistering hot landscape by day and a bearable desert by night. During your trip, stepping out of an air-conditioned vehicle becomes unthinkable, and sleeping at night can be challenging unless you're accustomed to extreme heat. Daytime temperatures consistently exceed 40 degrees, only dropping to around 30 degrees at night. Summer winds offer no relief, but instead add to the scorching conditions. It's not until August that temperatures start to mildly decline. The surface water temperature of the Aral Sea ranges between 26 to 30 degrees Celsius during this time.
Aral Sea in August
Autumn is another favorable season for visiting the Aral Sea. The climate cools down, and sometimes strong winds start blowing. Daytime temperatures gradually fall below 30 degrees, and by late autumn, they reach about 10 degrees. Nights can become quite chilly, especially as the first frosts begin in late October.
Aral Sea in November
Winter is less welcoming, characterized by cloudy skies and chilling winds that strip away any remaining warmth. Precipitation is scarce but does occur occasionally. The phenomenon known as "lake-effect snow" may happen when cold air moves over the relatively warmer waters, causing localized light snowfall. Additionally, during the winter months, the yurt camp on the Aral Sea is closed, and roads can become hazardous after rainfall.
To sum up, the best time to visit the Aral Sea is in April, May, September, and October. No matter which month you choose, be sure to bring sunglasses—not only to protect against the intense sun but also to guard against dust particles during strong winds.
