Tbilisi Wine Museum
Address: Tbilisi, Sioni street, 8
The traditions of Georgian winemaking date back to ancient times. You can learn all about it at the Tbilisi Wine Museum. It is located in the Metropolitan Museum of History's spacious cellars, called "Karvasla". The collection contains numerous exhibits that have become living witnesses of Georgian history and the life of local winemakers. Here you will find many ancient finds that have survived to this day: jugs for pouring wine, clay vessels called Qvevri, drinking vessels made in the shape of a horn, oak barrels, as well as copies of copper figurines that were found in western Georgia, and date back to the 7th century BC. Here you can see the famous toastmaster figurine, an enlarged version of which is also installed in Tbilisi on Sioni Street.
The basements of the museum are connected by wide tunnels. The exhibition space provides visitors with information about the history and traditions of winemaking and the unique method of aging wine in clay vessels called qvevri. In the museum, you can visit the wine tasting and an interactive area with a hall for lectures and film screenings. The museum offers up to 200 types of wine to choose from, reflecting the scale and grandeur of the site itself.
The basement halls where the museum is located were flooded with water for a long time. Moving past the brick walls decorated with old photographs, you will learn about the wine-making traditions and about the history of the place itself. "Karvasla" was opened on the site of the former Artsruni caravanserai, which was built at the beginning of the 19th century.
The Wine Museum in Tbilisi has space for organizing lectures, film screenings, conferences, master classes, and working meetings. In addition, here you can take a two-day tasting course, where you can try yourself as a sommelier and receive a symbolic certificate.
